[Podcast]: Why Algorithm Tweaks Are Not Enough
In the aftermath of the horrifying 15/3 attacks on New Zealand’s Muslim community the role of social media platforms in enabling white supremacy has come under scrutiny. Last week I spoke with Jamie Green from Radio One’s breakfast show to consider how tech companies have evaded responsibility for what happens on their platforms. I argue that the public shaming of Facebook, YouTube and others is not enough. A real answer to this problem will not be algorithmic tweaks or extra moderation but anti-monopoly regulation and devising a democratic public service model for social media. It is essential to come up with solutions that do not further empower tech oligarchs only interested in the minimal crisis PR response necessary to avoid regulation. Have a listen.
