The showpiece of our broadcast journalism program at USP is our annual student documentary film screening. In my three years in Fiji I have helped my students develop their visual storytelling skills in order to share unique tales of the Pacific. Documentary storytelling is about capturing characters in their milieu and allowing their experiences to speak to bigger issues. Teaching my students the tools to observe and create authentic impressions of Pacific life has enabled them to highlight traditional ways of life, the threats of climate and pressing social issues such as youth suicide.
In 2016 our students competing against the top students of Australasia claimed two runner-up OSSIE award for from the Journalism Educators and Researchers Association. Here’s to a few more in 2017.
